Have you ever wandered through a dollar store or a pharmacy, only to find yourself face-to-face with an RGB keyboard or a gaming headset? It's a curious phenomenon, and it raises an intriguing question: What can you get from your local home store to elevate your gaming setup?
You might be surprised at the variety of tech-related items available in these unexpected places. For instance, desks and chairs are a common find. However, the quality and design can be hit or miss. We recently embarked on a mission to discover the gems hidden among the cordless drills and lumber at Home Desperate.
We were initially drawn to a combo deal featuring a sleek black computer desk and a pink massage recliner chair. But upon closer inspection, we uncovered a truth that's hard to swallow: these combos are often rebrands of Alibaba specials, complete with cheap gimmicks like LED piping accents and branded speakers.
The massage feature in the chair was an interesting marketing gimmick, but the reality was underwhelming. The vibrators were only in the lumbar pillow, which was conveniently impossible to reposition or remove. The chair itself was flimsy, and the desk was a hollow structure held together with poorly threaded hex screws.
Our quest for a keyboard led us to an interesting discovery. Home Desperate had a variety of mechanical keyboards listed on their website, but when it came time to make the purchase, they were out of stock. Instead, we ended up with a 3-in-1 pack that included a keyboard, mouse, and headset.
The peripherals were a mixed bag. The mouse had terrible tracking, and the keyboard was made by a brand that appears to be a subsidiary of CR micro, a company primarily owned by the Chinese government. The headphones were comfortable for their price, but the sound quality left much to be desired.
We also picked up a 27-inch Sansui monitor with a 1080p resolution and a 100 Hz refresh rate. It was a decent monitor for the price, but the quality was far from perfect. The speakers, on the other hand, had a unique feature: they fired backwards, which created an interesting spatial sound effect, though not one that was particularly accurate.
Ergonomics were a significant concern throughout our setup. The monitor arm was surprisingly easy to set up and had reasonable cable routing, but the chair and desk heights were mismatched, leading to discomfort and back pain.
Each individual piece of our gaming setup felt like "manufactured garbage," but when put together, it somehow formed a functional whole. It was a jury-rigged solution, but it worked. However, for those looking for a more comfortable and high-quality gaming experience, it might be worth investing in better equipment.
In the end, our adventure through Home Desperate revealed that while it's possible to find tech items for your gaming setup, the quality can be hit or miss. For a truly immersive gaming experience, it might be worth looking elsewhere.
