Their innovative creation, Hydro Food, is a groundbreaking machine that transforms a kilo of seeds into ten times as much plant food for both animals and humans, requiring minimal water and no fertilizers, pesticides, or soil.

A Revolution in Nutrition

Seventeen-year-old Constan Dudan is one of the masterminds behind this revolutionary machine. "You can program it to grow wheat, oats, alfalfa, which are highly nutritious for both humans and animals, or almonds and corn, which grow like a type of grass," he explains. The machine was designed to produce food in extreme climate conditions, particularly after natural disasters like floods, droughts, and fires. This summer, for instance, massive wildfires rendered the soil infertile, making traditional planting and harvesting impossible.

Sustainability at Its Core

The Hydro Food machine is not only efficient but also sustainable. It recycles water, saving 90% of what would normally be used for a crop. A larger version, the size of a refrigerator, can produce 300 kilos of nutritional plant food every 6 to 9 days. And the best part? It's powered by solar energy and can be monitored and operated through a cell phone.

From Trash to Treasure

The students' invention is a testament to creativity and resourcefulness. Both the large and small versions of the machine are made almost entirely from recycled materials found at flea markets or even on the street. "This former printer, this piece of a water pipe, and this water pump from a car," Dudan points out, highlighting the frugality of their innovation. The most expensive component is the software, which costs a mere $10.

The implications of this invention are profound. The students have won a national innovation award and were invited to Harvard and MIT to showcase their creation. Their inspiration? To help their community, region, country, and ultimately, the world.
