In the shadow of Russia's invasion, Ukraine has been thrust into a new era of warfare, where the skies above are as critical as the ground below. Amid the limited movement on the frontline, the use of drones has emerged as a pivotal tool in countering Russian advances. Journalists Quentin Somerville and Darren Conway have ventured into the heart of the conflict, near the town of Lypy, to bring us a special report on the war's silent sentinels.

The Night Haunting Skies

Imagine a night where fear is your constant companion, the sky above buzzing with the threat of destruction. For Sana, a villager near the Russian border, this is her reality. "Things were flying over you, right over you," she recalls, her voice trembling. "Everything was shooting, everything was exploding." The National Guard's drone team in Har is all too aware of this terror, working tirelessly to keep the skies clear of enemy drones, each capable of carrying bombs that can strike with deadly precision.

A Dance with Danger

The landscape of Lypy is being transformed into dust by glide bombs, which Russian aircraft deploy with pinpoint accuracy. The Ukrainian response? A dance with danger, where speed is life. "We're going very fast," one soldier explains, "because of the drones." Their vehicles are equipped with drone-jamming technology, but it's a constant race against time. In the open, they are vulnerable, and moving fast is their only defense.

The New Battlefield

The battlefield is evolving, with drones now as much a part of the war as infantry and artillery. This frontline stretches over 10 kilometers, and at any given moment, dozens of drones are in the air, both Russian and Ukrainian. The fighting is more immediate, more responsive, and more dangerous than ever before.

A War of attrition

Each day, Ukrainian drones take out enemy positions in the forest, with stunning effectiveness. "About 100 enemy died because of these drones only in our front line," a soldier reveals. It's a war of attrition, fought not just with traditional weapons but with technology that can detect and strike unseen enemies.

The Boogyman's Threat

Enter the Boogyman drone, a heavyweight in the skies, packing a 10 kg bomb capable of destroying armored vehicles or command posts. Launched with urgency, it's a reminder that the war's rules are being rewritten, and the skies are the new battleground.

A Race Against Time

As the sound of glide bombs hitting trenches echoes around them, the Ukrainian soldiers know they're in a race against time. "I think we day okay, let's go," one says, the urgency palpable. The rules of war are being rewritten, and the future of conflict may soon be fought entirely in the skies.

In this new chapter of warfare, Ukraine's drone defense is not just a tool but a lifeline, a beacon of hope in the darkest of times.
