The four nights of Donald Trump's nominating convention in Milwaukee were a carefully orchestrated attempt to give one of the most divisive politicians in recent US history a makeover. Republicans described him as a loving and caring family man whose near assassination had changed him. As he accepted his party's presidential nomination on Thursday night, it seemed Trump had bought into these efforts to repackage him as a humbler, unifying figure, more palatable to swing voters crucial for winning the November 5th election. But then, he returned to form.

If you took the 10 worst Presidents in the history of the United States and added them up, they would not have done the damage that Biden has done, Trump claimed early in his speech. It was clear that Donald Trump is the same Donald Trump we've always seen. Jennifer Lawless, who chairs the politics department at the University of Virginia, noted the unusual nature of a campaign releasing excerpts and talking points about a speech that then didn't come true. The idea that Donald Trump was going to send a unifying message, that this was not going to be a speech like we'd ever heard before, was what was touted among talking heads all day, but it didn't pan out.

Trump had told the Washington Examiner earlier in the week that he had torn up the original speech he planned to give in favor of one preaching national unity after his near brush with death. However, this new version of Trump lasted barely half an hour. Although he said that he wanted to be the president for all of America, he bashed Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, illegal immigrants, immigrants, and transgender athletes. He doubled down on all of the rhetoric that we've heard from him and even added new offensive rhetoric to his speech.

So, was this speech a success? In some ways, I don't think so. The convention ended on a sour note. Everything had seemed pretty perfect from a presentation perspective until Trump took the stage and deviated. The Trump more familiar to Americans, the bombastic thrower of insults who devils and demonizes his opponents, reemerged, trampling over the message of unity so painstakingly choreographed by the Republican National Committee this week.

He painted a dark picture of a crumbling America, a nation in decline, its cities crime-ridden and economically depressed. This is a staple image of his stump speech in which he presents himself as the country's savior. In terms of the substance of Donald Trump's speech last night, though, this was a gift to Democrats. But do Democrats really have a problem with Trump's divisive rhetoric?

US President Joe Biden criticized Trump's rambling 92-minute address that broke the record for the longest convention speech in history and vowed to get back on the campaign trail. The president was sidelined by COVID-19 but is facing unrelenting calls from within his own party to step aside as a candidate, as fallout continues to roil the party following Biden's shaky debate performance last month.

So, what does this all mean? Was the attempt to repackage Trump as a humbler, unifying figure a failure? It seems so. Despite the efforts of the Republican Party, Trump returned to his usual divisive rhetoric, bashing his opponents and painting a dark picture of America. This speech was more of a gift to Democrats than a successful attempt at a makeover. As the campaign trail heats up, it will be interesting to see how this failed attempt at a Trump makeover will affect the election in November. Will voters be swayed by Trump's familiar divisive rhetoric, or will they be looking for a more unifying message from their presidential candidate? Only time will tell. But for now, it seems that the makeover of Donald Trump has failed to convince even his own party.
