Have you ever wondered what would happen if a baseball could break the sound barrier? What kind of force and precision would it take? We embarked on this fascinating journey with a supersonic baseball cannon, and the results are nothing short of extraordinary.

The Quest for Speed

We started with a simple question: Can a baseball go supersonic? The answer was a resounding yes, as we achieved a staggering 1050 miles an hour, surpassing the speed of sound at Mach 1.38. But this was just the beginning. Our real mission was to understand and harness this incredible speed as a tool for further exploration.

The Curve of Challenge

Our journey was not without its hurdles. We discovered that as the baseball speeds up, it encounters increasing drag force. This led us to a critical point where the drag force drops off, creating a unique aerodynamic regime we knew little about. We needed to characterize this behavior, and thus began our experiments with pressure and velocity.

The Tools of Discovery

Equipped with high-speed cameras capable of capturing 36,000 frames per second, we meticulously recorded every aspect of the baseball's supersonic journey. We set up flags marked at 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 feet to measure the baseball's velocity and trajectory with unparalleled precision.

A Spectrum of Experiments

From shooting baseballs at various pressures to testing the effects of different materials like silly putty and cake sprinkles, our experiments covered a wide spectrum. Each test provided valuable data points, helping us understand the behavior of objects in supersonic regimes.

The Moment of Truth

Our first calibration shot at 300 PSI and a vacuum of -8 PSI resulted in a muzzle velocity of 917 miles an hour. This was just the beginning. As we adjusted the pressure and vacuum, we gathered more data points, defining the drag coefficient of a baseball from 917 miles an hour to about 825.

A patrons' Request

One of our patrons, Andrew Maxie, suggested we test the effects of sprinkles on the baseball's velocity. This led to a series of experiments that not only provided valuable data but also offered a unique visual spectacle.

The Unexpected

In the spirit of scientific exploration, we also tested the effects of mayonnaise on the baseball's trajectory. While it didn't go as planned, it provided an unexpected lesson in momentum conservation and the fascinating behavior of shockwaves.

Our experiments provided a wealth of data, allowing us to fill in the velocity charts and understand the behavior of objects in supersonic conditions. Each data point brought us closer to unraveling the mysteries of supersonic travel.
