The question lingers, haunting him like the echoes of conflict that still resonate through the streets.
What drives a person to leave everything behind? When did this war begin, and how did it escalate to such proportions? These are questions that Tark, like many Sudanese, grapples with daily. When the Army regained control of his district, he returned, only to find his car gone. The neighbors spoke of the Rapid Support Forces breaking into homes, seizing cars arbitrarily. But is this the fate of all the missing vehicles?
Cars have long been a source of income and pride for Sudanese citizens. Yet, in this conflict, they have become a symbol of something far darker. Videos show paramilitary RSF fighters forcing people from their vehicles, using them as weapons against the Army. The police report nearly 40,000 cars missing or stolen since the conflict began. The tales of these vehicles, found in varying states of disrepair, tell a story of the severity of the conflict—caught in the crossfire, hit by artillery, abandoned and forgotten.
Jamal Al, a resident of Kum, knows this story all too well. The RSF came and took his car, leaving him to search for it among the scrap heaps of the capital.
