Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be sandwiched in a space that's rapidly decreasing, not in size, but in the viability of existence? This is the reality for the 2 million Palestinians packed in the Gaza Strip, where the very space they call home is being systematically eroded by the Israeli war machine.
Gaza, already one of the most densely populated regions globally, now has a mere 14% of its area left for its people to shelter. The UN reports that a staggering 86% of Gaza is under Israeli evacuation orders. The question that looms is, where do these people go when every spare space, even cemeteries, are occupied?
The situation in Gaza is dire. By the start of July, most buildings had been damaged or destroyed by the Israeli military, rendering most population centers uninhabitable. The Israeli forces continue to push Palestinians out of their neighborhoods, a strategy they term as "adjustments" to their designated safe zones. But for the Palestinians, these evacuation orders are nothing but a forced displacement tactic, a strategy that has been in play since Israel's war on Gaza began in October.
The UN estimates that nine out of ten people in Gaza have been displaced at least once, with some being uprooted as many as nine or ten times. The map tells a story of a people continuously pushed further south, into the strip of almasi, designated as the permanent safe zone. However, this 'safe zone' is far from secure, as it has been repeatedly attacked.
Life in these areas is not just dangerous; it's barely sustainable. The infrastructure is in shambles, yet thousands of Palestinians call it home. And now, with another evacuation order, Israel has cut off another 15% of this space, claiming it was used by Hamas to fire rockets.
So, where do these displaced Palestinians go? According to the UN's analysis of satellite images, 55% of all buildings in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed, and 65% of the road network has met the same fate. Amidst these horrific conditions, approximately 400,000 Palestinians still live in the rubbles, in places Israel deems unsafe.
Andrea de Dominico from the UN says that Gaza residents are being moved around like pawns in a board game. For the Palestinians, it's a cynical game of survival, one in which they have no control. This is the story of the shrinking Gaza, a tale of displacement and desolation that needs our attention and action.
