Samsung has been at the forefront of this innovation, and today, I'm excited to share my first impressions of the much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, straight from the streets of Paris.
What sets the Galaxy Z Fold 6 apart from its predecessor, the Z Fold 5? The first thing that strikes you is the display. Both phones boast a 7.6-inch screen when unfolded, but the Z Fold 6 has a slightly larger 6.3-inch cover screen compared to the Z Fold 5's 6.2-inch screen. At full brightness, they look almost identical, but the Z Fold 6 has a more symmetrical bezel design, making it feel more like a traditional smartphone.
One of the trade-offs with foldable phones has always been the crease down the middle. While it's still quite noticeable, Samsung has made strides to reduce it by adjusting the display layers and hinge. The crease feels less intrusive when scrolling, which is a noticeable improvement over the Z Fold 5.
Holding the Z Fold 6 is a revelation. The squared-off corners, reminiscent of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, offer a unique grip that feels more like holding a notebook. The Z Fold 5, with its glossier finish and softer corners, feels more conventional but lacks the Z Fold 6's distinctiveness.
Weight is another significant consideration. The Z Fold 6 is lighter than its predecessor, which is immediately noticeable when you pick it up. While foldable phones will always be thicker and heavier than standard ones, this weight reduction is a step in the right direction.
Paris is a photographer's dream, and the Z Fold 6 didn't disappoint. The cameras are similar to the Z Fold 5, with a 50-megapixel main camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. Samsung has improved the ultra-wide sensor for better low-light performance, and the new portrait studio feature is quite impressive. After a day with the Z Fold 6, it's clear that Samsung has refined its foldable technology. The quality of life improvements make it a more polished and usable device. If you're a fan of foldables and looking for something new, the Z Fold 6 might just be the upgrade you're looking for. However, if you're unsure about the technology or already own a Z Fold 5, this may not be a worth-the-upgrade leap.
