Have you ever been stuck at an airport, unable to catch your flight due to a system outage? Well, this morning, that was the reality for many people around the world. CNN breaking news brought us a live look at the airport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where reporters and politico types were trying to get out, but just like almost every other airport on Earth, Milwaukee was affected by this major IT glitch.
What caused this widespread outage? The CEO of CrowdStrike Cybersecurity firm revealed that a content update to its software triggered outages within Windows, the most widely used computer operating system in the world. But CrowdStrike insists this is not a security incident or a cyber attack. It's just bad. It's packing a wallop, affecting airports, airlines, businesses, stock exchanges, and even the metro in DC. Anyone trying to get on a computer in these places overnight saw that dreaded blue screen of death on their monitors.
But there's a glimmer of hope. Just minutes ago, United Airlines announced that it is resuming some flights, and American Airlines safely reestablished operations. However, this small fix isn't helping a whole lot of passengers right now, as many other major airlines, including Delta, are still under a ground stop. And it's not just the US; travelers overseas are experiencing the same madness.
Take a look at the packed airports in Greece, Madrid, Berlin, and Lisbon. Passengers are stuck in limbo, hoping against hope that their flights will resume. One traveler stuck in Australia shared their frustration, saying, "We were heading home to Adelaide, and the last couple of hours, just sort of hoping that against hope that the Jetstar gods would be kind." But it turned out that the gods were angry and demanded vengeance, leaving them stuck in Sydney for a bit longer.
So, what's happening with these systems? CNN's Tom Foreman spoke with CrowdStrike and Microsoft to get the answer. It seems that CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm that works with Microsoft, sent out an update that did not agree with the Microsoft system. This caused systems all over the world to give users the blue screen of death, shutting everything down.
But CrowdStrike and Microsoft are making progress. They've identified, isolated, and deployed a fix for the problem. The solution is now racing around the world to fix all these systems. However, the outage has already affected many institutions, including grocery stores, banks, and metro systems in New York, Newark, LaGuardia, and Kennedy.
As we wait for the fix to reach all corners of the globe, we can only hope that the IT outage will be resolved soon, and we can all resume our normal lives. But until then, we'll just have to keep waiting, wondering when we'll be able to catch our flights and get back to our routines. And as the clock ticks, we can only ask ourselves: What other surprises does this IT outage have in store for us?
