Malik Amar, born as Chapu in the late 1540s, was a member of the Aromo people, caught in the crossfire of ongoing conflicts. At the age of 12, he was captured and sold into the Indian Ocean slave trade. Yet, in this part of the world, enslaved individuals retained legal rights and there was less discrimination against them once freed. This unique environment allowed some, like Amar, to rise above their circumstances, though the trauma of enslavement never fully faded.
Taken to Baghdad, Amar was educated in Arabic and converted to Islam before being sold to the Chief Minister of Amagar, a man who had also risen from enslavement to become the second-in-command to the sultan. Under the Chief Minister's tutelage, Amar learned the intricacies of politics, policy-making, and court life. After the Minister's death, his widow granted Amar freedom, setting him on a path that would change history.
As a newly freed African in India, Amar became a mercenary soldier, defending Amagar against Mughal invaders. His daring guerrilla tactics disrupted supply lines, derailed invasion plans, and earned him a loyal following. In 1600, capitalizing on a power vacuum, Amar placed a young puppet ruler on the throne and became the Regent and Chief Minister. He married his daughter to the new Sultan, securing his position and solidifying his power.
Yet, not all were pleased with Amar's rise to prominence. The new Sultan conspired to remove him, but their plans were thwarted by a mysterious poisoning. With the Sultan's son now on the throne, Malik Amar held complete control over Amagar, leading the region to stability and prosperity for over 25 years.
But what made Malik Amar truly remarkable was his ability to unite a diverse army of local Indians, enslaved, and newly freed Africans. His military genius and piety earned him respect and fear alike. Though some accused him of sorcery or devil worship, few could match his strategic brilliance.
