In the heart of war-torn Syria, Bashra Al Zuu found her escape not in flight alone but in the transformative power of sport. In 2012, with her mother and seven siblings, she fled Southern Syria just after the war's残酷 inception. Fast forward 12 years, and Bashra's life has undergone a remarkable transformation, with sport playing a pivotal role in her journey.
"All the men in my life told me that I was not made for sports," Bashra recounts. But something within her ignited when she discovered the world of sports. Witnessing Yra Madini, a Syrian swimmer competing in the Olympics, became a beacon of inspiration. "She's a woman, she's Syrian, and she lived my experience of crossing borders in a way that is more horrible," Bashra says.
Bashra's ambition is palpable. "I'm still young, and in a few years, I still want to be running. I want to show how the refugee team can transform lives." This drive is not just personal; it's a representation of hope for 12 million people worldwide. "It's a huge responsibility to represent them, and it's such an honor to be here," she declares.
The numbers are staggering: 120 million people have been forced from their homes due to conflict, violence, or human rights violations, according to the UN. Bashra's journey mirrors the challenges faced by countless refugees. "It's not easy to do sports, but I think this is the only way you can get up," she asserts. "For women, it's obviously very very hard, but it comes with sacrifices."
