Imagine a world where buying peanut butter directly lifts farmers out of poverty. This isn't just a dream—it's the reality for farmers involved with COMACO, a pioneering initiative that's changing the face of agriculture in Zambia.
Whenever someone purchases "It’s Wild" peanut butter, the proceeds go directly to the farmers. The mission is clear: to eradicate poverty from these hardworking individuals. But how? The answer lies in agroforestry, a practice that's proving to be a game-changer for small-scale farmers.
COMACO is working with over 253,000 small-scale farmers, providing them with training, knowledge, and the tools to plant trees, practice agroforestry, and embrace conservation farming. Gliricidia, a tree introduced to restore soil health, has become a symbol of change.
Remember when change seemed impossible? Many farmers, including myself, were once skeptical of the Gliricidia tree's benefits. But three years after planting, the results were undeniable. Yields improved dramatically, and with them, the farmers' lives.
But the benefits don't stop at increased yields. Farmers can now receive additional financial rewards from the carbon stored in their trees. Acorn, a partner in this venture, measures the growth in biomass and sells the sequestered carbon to companies with climate goals, with 80% of the proceeds going back to the farmers.
The peanuts grown by these small-scale farmers are now being loaded into trailers, destined for a factory where they'll be transformed into peanut butter. This journey, from field to factory, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of these farmers.
We buy commodities from our farmers at premium prices, rewarding their efforts in conservation farming. The Eastern Province of Zambia's economy is heavily reliant on agriculture, and our work to improve the land benefits not just the farmers but the entire country.
COMACO, the federation, and Acorn Rabobank are now united in a mission to further improve the livelihoods of farmers through agroforestry. This practice not only increases resilience against climate change, land degradation, and food insecurity but also brings a sense of pride.
Working with such a vast number of small-scale farmers is a source of immense pride. We're not just producing for our own survival; we're producing for the nation. Together, we're sowing the seeds of change, one tree at a time.
