In a classroom bustling with ambition in Prag grud, India, students are huddled together, their eyes fixed on textbooks and notes, preparing for a myriad of tests. Among these, the civil services exam stands as a beacon of opportunity, a gateway to a stable career as a federal government bureaucrat. But what drives millions of young Indians to chase these jobs, even as the private sector continues to grow?

Government figures reveal a startling statistic: between 2014 and 2022, 220 million people applied for federal jobs, with only 722,000 being selected. This pursuit of government employment, despite living in the world's fastest-growing major economy, underscores the cultural and economic anxieties that grip many Indians.

Why do so many young Indians see government jobs as the Holy Grail? The answer lies in the uncertain employment market where job opportunities, let alone job security, are scarce. Sunil Kumar, a prospective candidate, sees government employment as a safer bet than private sector jobs. "I would have worked in the private sector like any common man if there was no security in government jobs," he laments.

For Maru Ahmed, who has been running a coaching academy in Prayagraj since 2014, this trend has been a boon. His academy, which offers both physical and online classes, currently tutors around 25,000 to 30,000 students a year across five branches. Despite the low success rates, with only 5 to 10% securing jobs, the demand remains sky-high. "This is one of the worst times we've seen," Ahmed notes. "Never before have so many students applied for a government job vacancy announcement. There are very limited vacancies, but the number of aspirants has increased across all levels of government, including the Armed Forces, schools, health services, and the military."

But what about the millions of unfilled jobs? According to estimates by India's main opposition party, the Indian National Congress, nearly 6 million jobs remain unfilled. An email seeking data on government employment and vacancies sent to the federal government went unanswered, adding fuel to the fire of speculation and uncertainty.

Why is this obsession with government jobs so pervasive? Is it merely a quest for security in an unpredictable world, or is it a reflection of deeper societal issues? As the demand for government jobs continues to surge, it's essential to delve into the root causes and find sustainable solutions that can benefit both the youth and the nation as a whole.

So, what can be done to address this issue? And how can we create a more balanced and secure employment landscape for the future? Stay tuned.
