Inspired by the narrative approach of Crash Course World History, Philipp embarked on a journey to make learning exciting and accessible. Starting in 2012, with YouTube less commercial and more idealistic, Kurzgesagt was a passion project with no external funding, fueled solely by intrinsic motivation and the support of a few friends.
The early years were grueling, with the team working day jobs and dedicating their nights to creating content. It was a labor of love that almost broke them, but the introduction of Patreon and sponsorships in 2015 turned things around, allowing the channel to break even and eventually profit.
Running an animation studio with offices in Munich and Berlin comes with a hefty price tag. With over 60 full-time employees and numerous freelancers, the cost of salaries alone is in the millions. So, how do we manage to keep our content free? The answer lies in a diversified revenue stream that includes ad revenue, sponsorships, and our shop.
Our largest source of income, accounting for 40% over the last eight years, is our shop, which grew significantly after we launched our calendar in 2016. YouTube ads and Patreon contributions also play crucial roles, accounting for 13% and 9% of our revenue, respectively. We've also received funding from institutional sponsors, including the Gates Foundation and German Public Broadcasting, but we ensure that these partnerships do not influence our editorial content.
