In the soft glow of dawn, Jaffer Isma steps into his field, the recent rainfall glistening on the soil. This is a task he should have completed in late May, but these are not ideal times. Once fertile, the land now thirsts for the abundant rains of yesteryears. With less rainfall each year, the specter of poor harvests looms large. Compounding this challenge, the influx of hundreds of thousands of refugees has reduced the land available for cultivating crops. Subsistence farmers like Jaffer, who form the backbone of the country's output, now face a daunting battle.
Why has farming become so difficult? What can be done to turn the tide?
The lack of access to mechanized tools, quality seeds, and loans hampers production. However, the gravest threat comes from climate change. Irregular rainfall, prolonged droughts, and pests have devastated the agricultural sector. Walk through the market, and you'll notice the stark decline in food supplies. Most farmers are grappling with poor rainfall and soil degradation, directly affecting production. This year, for instance, a significant temperature increase led to trees withering and dying. Environmentalists argue that addressing the impact of climate change requires adopting climate-resilient agricultural practices and diversifying crops. Yet, a high level of poverty stands in the way.
But what does this mean for the future of agriculture in Chad?
Chard, dry for most of the year, depends heavily on the rainy season. However, with minimal rain this year, crops are smaller than ever. Farmers worry that if the trend continues, they won't harvest enough to sustain themselves. Lake Chad, once a sprawling 25,000 square kilometers, is now reduced to a mere 1,700 square kilometers. The World Food Programme reports that over 2 million Chadians rely on food aid due to poor harvests. As the impact of climate change worsens, farmers like Jaffer and the country can only hope for better rains.
Can hope alone sustain a nation facing such dire circumstances?
As the sun sets, casting long shadows over the fields, Jaffer reflects on his work. The challenges are immense, but the spirit to overcome them burns brightly. For the sake of his community and country, he prays for better rains, for resilient crops, and for the strength to face whatever the future brings.
