Welcome back, folks! Ever wondered if it's possible to light a match with a bullet? Well, today we're diving into that very question, and trust me, it's a wild ride. This isn't just about science; it's about the journey, the friendships formed, and the lessons learned along the way.
Remember the good old days when Smarter Every Day was just a couple of dudes hanging out in a garage, having fun? Yeah, me too. That's where our story begins. We wanted to recreate a video we made ages ago, where we tried—and failed—to light a match with a bullet. But this time, we were determined to make it work.
We started with the same setup: a Phantom v 20 511 camera, the kind that makes bullets look like they're in slow motion. We had our trusty friend John Henry by our side, and we were ready to go. But there was a problem. The strike anywhere matches we used to use were no longer available. After a lot of trial and error, we found a brand that worked—the Diamond brand strikingware matches.
We set up our matches, adjusted our aim, and fired. And fired. And fired again. Each time, we were met with frustration. The matches were either too far left, too low, or just wouldn't light. We were missing something. That's when we realized—precision is key.
After countless attempts and a lot of head-scratching, we made a discovery. The blast from the rifle was putting out the fire. So, we decided to put a piece of cardboard in front of the match to divert the smoke. And guess what? It worked! We finally lit a match with a bullet.
But we didn't stop there. We wanted the perfect shot. We adjusted our aim, changed the background colors for better contrast, and even increased the frame rate. We captured the magic moment at 180,000 frames per second, and it was breathtaking.
In the midst of our experiments, we had a Eureka moment. What if we shot a match out of the rifle? We gave it a shot (literally), and it was incredible. The bullet pushed the match through and lit it. It was a moment of pure joy and disbelief.
As we reflect on this journey, it's not just about the science. It's about the friendships we've formed, the lessons we've learned, and the fun we've had along the way. Science is great, but the moments shared with friends are priceless.
