Are you on the hunt for the perfect pair of premium noise-cancelling headphones? Look no further as we pit the Sonos Ace against the Bose Quiet Comfort Ultras in a series of real-world scenarios. Which one will come out on top? Let's find out.
Before we dive into the noise-cancelling capabilities, let's talk about design. Both the Sonos Ace and the Bose Quiet Comfort Ultras boast a body made mostly of plastic, leather, and a touch of metal. The cups on both models are similarly soft, ensuring comfort even during extended use. The QC Ultra stands out with its dual hinge design, allowing for a more compact fold, while the Ace features removable ear cups for easier replacements down the line.
Our first real-world test took place on a relatively busy street. With both headphones in transparency mode, we could hear our surroundings clearly and naturally. But what happens when we switch to noise-cancelling mode? The background noise reduced significantly, from 100% to about 25%—a truly impressive feat.
Next, we ventured into the hustle and bustle of Gay Perie. With a nice cafe as our testing ground, we put both headphones to the test. The Sonos Ace and Bose Quiet Comfort Ultras both have their unique killer features. The QC Ultra offers immersive audio, making music feel airy and less like it's inside your head. The Ace, on the other hand, has the TV swap feature, allowing you to transfer audio directly from selected Sonos Soundbars.
In transparency mode, both headphones allowed us to hear our surroundings clearly. Switching to noise-cancelling mode, the Ace reduced the overall noise to about 20%, while the QC Ultra brought it down to around 35-40%. The conversations around us were muffled, but the Ace seemed to have a slightly more dramatic decrease in noise levels.
Our little Paris adventure presented the perfect opportunity to test both headphones in a plane environment. With the Bose app and Sonos app at our disposal, we could manage and customize sound profiles and EQ settings. Once on the plane, both headphones excelled in cutting out cabin noise. The Ace offered a more aggressive switch from transparency to noise-cancelling, while the QC Ultras tapered more gradually.
After extensive testing, both headphones performed impressively, cutting out a substantial amount of noise. The switch to noise-cancelling was more instant on the Ace, thanks to its dedicated button. The QC Ultra also performed well but had moments where the aware mode didn't offer as wide a sound stage as the Ace.
So, who wins? If we had to pick a winner, it would be the Sonos Ace, edging out the QC Ultra with its snappy noise-cancelling activation.
Wondering why we were in Paris? We were filming another video exploring the French Capital with the new Galaxy Z Flip 6. Be sure to check that out!
