Among them was Dakuwaqa, a deity with an insatiable appetite for conquest and a prowess in combat that knew no bounds. But why did Dakuwaqa, who settled in the resource-rich Cakaudrove and transformed into a shark, feel unsatisfied? What drove him to challenge every vu, to establish his might, and to dominate all of Fiji's islands?
Dakuwaqa's quest for power led him to Rewa, where a quick and cunning eel-shaped vu awaited. The clash between the two was catastrophic, causing towering waves and flooding nearby communities. The eel was no match for Dakuwaqa's ferocity, but did this victory satisfy his relentless ambition?
Oddly enough, Dakuwaqa found a friend in Masilaca, a small, mischievous shark vu. But even friendship couldn't temper Dakuwaqa's pride and selfishness. When Masilaca introduced the formidable Rokobakaniceva, a giant octopus vu who guarded Kadavu, Dakuwaqa's response was predictable: he set out to conquer yet another rival.
Upon encountering Rokobakaniceva, Dakuwaqa's confidence was met with a challenge he couldn't overcome. The octopus vu, rooted to the seafloor, captured Dakuwaqa and flipped him over, triggering a mysterious state called tonic immobility. For the first time, Dakuwaqa faced defeat. In this vulnerable position, he made a promise that would alter his destiny forever.
With Rokobakaniceva's mercy, Dakuwaqa vowed to protect Fijian fishers and to no longer menace villagers or other vu. True to his word, he shifted from a conqueror to a guardian, guiding lost souls and warning of dangers at sea. How did this transformation affect the people of Fiji?
The Fijian people, grateful for Dakuwaqa's newfound protectiveness, paid homage to him by pouring yaqona into the ocean and offering fish heads as gestures of mutual care. What began as a tale of conquest ended in a legacy of coexistence and respect between the human and divine realms.
