Welcome to the ultimate tech-enabled family adventure! Have you ever wished you could transform your minivan into a mobile gaming lounge? We did, and we're excited to share our journey with you. Let's dive into how we turned a regular minivan into a gaming minivan, complete with all the trimmings.

The Challenge: A Promise to the Kids

It all started with a promise to the kids for a gaming minivan experience over the long weekend. The catch? The laptops we used to build the ultimate gaming setup had been repossessed by MSI. Now, we were left with a minivan that was more "ultimate" in name only.

The Solution: A Single Computer Setup

With no time to lose, we decided to go with a single computer setup. Instead of three separate laptops, we opted for one computer wired to multiple screens. This would allow the kids to choose what game to play together while having their own screens to look at.

The Heart of the System: A Mid-range Ryzen 5 5600

We chose a mid-range Ryzen 5 5600 for its balance of power and heat output. Paired with 16 gigs of T-Force memory and a P5 SSD, this setup would be the core of our gaming minivan. The motherboard, an x570 board from Asus, was a bit high-end but necessary for our setup.

The Display Dilemma: Xtrons to the Rescue

The old screens had fallen off, and the cables had broken. We needed a new display solution. Enter Xtrons, a company that provided us with some of the better TN screens we've seen. After installing these screens, we were ready to take on the next challenge: cable management.

Cable Management: Type C to the Rescue

We decided to use Type C cables for their versatility. However, we quickly realized that not all Type C cables are created equal. We needed a 20 series GPU that supports VR link through its Type-C connector. This would allow us to use a Type-C to Type-C cable for one of our displays, while the other two would still use Type-C inputs.

The IR Receiver: Controlling the System Remotely

To make the gaming minivan truly mobile, we needed a way to control the system remotely. Enter the IR receiver, a viewer-created device that could be used with any programmable remote to turn the PC on and off. This meant we could keep the IR receiver outside the car, ensuring it had a clear line of sight to the roof or a window.

The Mounting Plate: Keeping the Display in Place

We designed a mounting plate for the middle monitor to ensure it stayed in place during the bumpy rides. This plate was 3D printed with 100% fill in PTG, making it strong and secure.

The Wireless Router: Networking on the Go

To keep everyone connected, we installed a wireless router. This device would take the 4G puck we had and distribute networking to everything that needed it. Unfortunately, we couldn't install Starlink due to the lack of a small version at the time, so we settled for a 4G puck.

The Power Button: Adding a Physical Switch

We decided to extend the wires coming off the power button on the computer and install a physical switch in the front. This way, the kids could easily turn the system on and off without needing an IR remote.

The Final Touch: A Professional-Looking Installation

After much trial and error, we managed to get everything installed and looking professional. The HDMI input was neatly tucked away, and the IR receiver was positioned to ensure it had a clear line of sight to the roof or a window.

The Big Test: Does It All Work?

With everything in place, we powered up the system and tested it out. The kids plugged in their monitors, and we waited to see if the screens would turn on. Success! We had a working gaming minivan, complete with internet access and the ability to play games together.

The Verdict: A Successful Transformation

The end result was a gaming minivan that drew less power than the late afternoon sun. It looked amazing and had way more flexibility than we were even taking advantage of. The kids could now enjoy their gaming trips to Great Wolf Lodge, and we had fulfilled our promise.
