The tech world has been buzzing with anticipation, and now, the long-awaited Samsung Galaxy ring has finally arrived, promising to wrap itself around your finger. But can this smart ring really stake a claim as the lord of all smart rings? Let's dive in and uncover the truth.

I had the opportunity to spend an hour with the $400 Galaxy ring, and what struck me the most was its feather-light weight and comfort. Unlike other smart rings I've tested, this one weighs a mere 3 grams and resembles an ordinary band, making it easily mistaken for a wedding band. Crafted from titanium, it features a subtle concave dip, enhancing its jewelry-like appearance.

Is It Worth the Price Tag?

Yes, the Galaxy ring does come with a hefty price tag of $400, which might seem steep when compared to the $300 Aura ring. However, it's essential to remember that the Aura ring requires a $6 monthly subscription to access most of your health data. The Galaxy ring, on the other hand, requires no subscription, a move we can thank Samsung for.

Android Exclusive

For now, the Galaxy ring is Android-only, which might be a disappointment for some users. Given that the Galaxy watch has been Android-only for a few years, this exclusivity isn't too surprising. The ring comes in nine different sizes and three titanium finishes—gold, silver, or black. Pre-ordering from Samsung will even get you a sizing kit to ensure the perfect fit, and it's recommended to wear it on the index finger for better accuracy.

Health Tracking Taken to New Heights

Health tracking is the primary focus of the Galaxy ring. It can monitor activity, sleep, steps, and heart rate, offering a comprehensive suite of sensors like blood oxygen, skin temperature, and heart rate monitoring. The ring captures detailed sleep data, including how long it takes to fall asleep, nighttime movements, and morning breathing rate. You'll receive an energy score out of 100, which takes into account heart rate, sleep, and activity levels.

Samsung aims to go one step further than its competitors by offering personalized recommendations through Galaxy AI, including wellness tips. For instance, if the ring detects that it takes you a while to fall asleep, it might suggest meditation before bed. Additionally, the ring supports automatic workout detection for activities like walking and running, eliminating the need to manually start a workout on your phone.

Water-Resistant and Long-Lasting Battery

The Galaxy ring is water-resistant and IP68 rated, designed to be worn 24/7 for continuous health tracking. Depending on the ring size, the battery can last up to 6 or 7 days, with the largest sizes offering the longest run time. However, the new sleep apnea feature announced by Samsung is exclusive to the Galaxy watch, not the ring.

Gesture Controls and More

The gesture controls on the Galaxy ring are truly impressive. In my brief hands-on experience, I found the double pinch gesture to take a photo or stop a timer on the phone incredibly convenient. There's potential for more gestures in the future. Additionally, the ring connects with Samsung's Find app, allowing you to locate its last known position on a map. If you lose it around the house, simply ping the ring, and the LEDs will light up, making it easier to find.
