What drives a person to descend into the depths of the ocean, facing unimaginable challenges and risks? In January 2002, Dave Shaw, a highly ranked technical deep diver, embarked on a mission that would ultimately claim his life. His goal was to retrieve the remains of Dion Diver, a fellow diver who had perished 10 years earlier in the depths of Bushman'sgat, South Africa. This poignant story of courage and tragedy unfolds with chilling detail.
Dave's quest was born out of a deep sense of compassion. Dion's family had never received closure, and Dave was determined to bring Dion's bones back for a proper burial. The dive site was no ordinary challenge; Bushman'sgat is one of the world's deepest freshwater dives, plunging 271 meters into the abyss. The recovery operation was meticulously recorded by the diving team with an underwater camera, capturing every harrowing moment.
The dive began smoothly. Dave located Dion's body and secured a line to bring it to the surface. However, the mission took a terrifying turn when Dion's remains began to float away. The skeleton, encased within Dion's wetsuit, had transformed into a soap-like substance called "aropa," which is buoyant. Dave fought desperately to retrieve it, but the relentless ocean claimed its prize, and he had to abandon the attempt.
As Dave began his ascent, his light became snagged on the very line he had attached to Dion's body. In a panic, he struggled to free himself, but the lines had become hopelessly entangled. The immense physical effort to escape left Dave exhausted, and tragically, he succumbed to the pressure of the depths. He died just meters away from the body he had tried to save.
The recorded footage was narrated by Don Shirley, Dave's diving friend and support diver that day. Don's voice carries the weight of loss and the harrowing experience they both endured. He too came perilously close to losing his life in the attempt to save his friend.
Three days later, the dive team managed to pull both bodies to the surface, along with their equipment. The story of Dave Shaw and Dion Diver is a stark reminder of the risks and sacrifices made by those who dare to explore the unknown depths of our planet.
Why do we venture into the unknown, facing such daunting challenges? Perhaps it is the human spirit's relentless pursuit of understanding and compassion that drives us. Dave Shaw's brave attempt to bring closure to Dion's family is a testament to the depths we are willing to go to help others. As we reflect on this tragic tale, let us remember the courage and selflessness of those who explore the abyss, and the profound impact they have on our lives.
