This has been a year like no other, a difficult year marked by political turmoil and personal trials. As a wife, mother, and political figure, I've faced challenges that have tested the very core of my being. Can one truly thrive amidst such adversity? Let's explore this question together.
When my husband, Major Michael Haley, was deployed to Africa on his second active duty tour while I was in the midst of a campaign, the emotional toll was immense. We've been inseparable since we met at the tender age of 17, and his absence left a void that nothing could fill. The uncertainty of his safety and the distance between us were almost unbearable.
Have you ever faced a challenge that made you feel completely out of your element?
During that time, I remember the outpouring of support from friends and strangers alike, who understood the sacrifice military families make. But then, there was a moment when Donald Trump mocked his absence, suggesting he was away for reasons other than serving his country. It was a low blow, but it only served to strengthen my resolve.
The sacrifices made by military personnel are unparalleled, and it's a topic we should never trivialize. They put their lives on the line to ensure our freedom, and we owe them our respect and gratitude.
What can we do to ensure we never minimize the sacrifices of those serving in the military?
As I reflect on the past year, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences that have shaped me. Running for president was a journey that opened my eyes to perspectives I had never considered. I was blessed with a supportive team and friends who stood by me every step of the way.
Despite suspending my campaign, I was overwhelmed by the continued support from voters. Their belief in me was a testament to the power of community and resilience.
How does it feel to have people continue to support you even after you've stepped back from a pursuit?
Personal loss also marked this year, with the passing of my beloved father, Ajit Singh, on Father's Day. The pain of losing a parent is indescribable, but I take comfort in the knowledge that he was proud of me and my siblings. We were raised to appreciate our blessings by giving back, and that's a legacy I will always carry with me.
How do you honor the legacy of your parents in your daily life?
Amidst these challenges, life continued to throw curveballs. I had to manage my daughter's wedding and the whirlwind of emotions that came with it. Through it all, I remained grateful for the love and support of my family and the country I serve.
As for what's next, I'm not sure. The thought of running for president again is daunting, but I believe my voice will always be needed. I will continue to fight for my country and work towards making it stronger.
What are the most pressing issues you believe need to be addressed in our country today?
This year has been a rollercoaster of emotions, but through it all, I've discovered an inner strength I never knew I had. It's a strength that comes from love, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference.
How do you find the strength to keep going when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges?
