Our world is on the cusp of a monumental shift towards sustainability, yet one sector seems to lag behind. Could the key to revolutionizing our built environment lie in the materials we use?
Buildings account for a staggering 33% of global emissions, with 80% of these emissions occurring throughout a building's lifespan. While many are focused on improving energy efficiency post-construction, it's crucial to delve into the source - the materials themselves.
Enter Laminated Timber (LT), the alternative building material taking center stage. Sustainable, renewable, lightweight, fire-resistant, and cost-effective, LT is changing the construction game. The Ascent apartment block, the tallest timber building globally, boasts 19 upper floors made entirely from LT. Stockholm's upcoming "Wood City" project will set a new precedent, utilizing more LT than any other construction ever built.
Hot on LT's heels is bamboo, a material lightweight, strong, and flexible, with a growth rate that leaves wood in the dust. Despite requiring more maintenance, some architects are hailing bamboo as the "green steel" of the 21st century, thanks to its ability to sequester a significant amount of CO2.
But what about projects that can't be made from renewable or recycled materials? Could Hydrogen Steel be the answer? Steel production is energy-intensive, but by replacing coal-powered furnaces with green hydrogen, we could decarbonize this industry. Although currently increasing steel costs by a third, experts predict this will balance out by 2030.
As we build new areas the size of Paris every week, primarily in emerging markets, it's clear that materials play a vital role in decarbonizing our built environment. Alongside energy efficiency and circular approaches to waste, sustainable materials like LT, bamboo, and potentially Hydrogen Steel offer hope for a greener future.
By reevaluating the materials we use in construction, we can pave the way for a sustainable built environment. Are you ready to embrace this new era of construction?
