Are you tired of politics as usual? In the heart of Australia's Gold Coast, a refreshing wave of change is gathering momentum. In the federal electorate of McFerson, a community-driven movement is on the hunt for a candidate who promises a fresh perspective and a commitment to long-term thinking.
It's a sunny winter's day in McFerson, a region encompassing suburbs like Blythe Heads, Robina, and Caran. Yet, the warmth of the sun does little to alleviate the sense of fatigue and disappointment among the community. The major parties' antics have left many voters yearning for something different. Enter McFerson Independent, a group founded by Leah Stackpool, on a mission to find a candidate who will rise above the divisiveness of modern politics.
What does the community really want? A leader who is not just a politician but a community and business leader, someone who truly understands the heartbeat of the area. This is the first time a community group, backed by Climate 200, has taken an active role in this seat. Stackpool shares, "We're seeing people, families who are sleeping in their cars, and we feel like that shouldn't be happening in this rich country."
With an initial grant of $27,000 from Climate 200, McFerson Independent is building a campaign focused on climate issues and the cost of living. This funding is a boost, helping them establish a strong foundation for their movement.
In a surprising twist, Karen Andrews, the sitting MP, is stepping down, leaving the LMP seat vulnerable. Enter Leon Rebello, the LNP candidate, who is taking nothing for granted. "I don't believe in safe seats," he asserts, running a campaign that addresses the issues that matter to the people.
Further north on the Sunshine Coast, another Climate 200-backed group, Fairfax Matters, is holding small gatherings to understand voter concerns. The cost of living is a significant issue, with many families struggling to make ends meet. Colin Graham of Fairfax Matters believes that the changing demographic of the region could make it vulnerable, especially in a seat traditionally held by the LMP.
The major parties are not the only ones feeling the heat. The Greens are also gaining momentum, with their sights set on securing more seats. In areas like Morton and Lily, where over 50% of residents are renters, the Greens see an opportunity to connect with voters on the front lines of the cost of living and housing crisis.
Labor MP Greg Perrott, who has held the seat of Morton since 2007, is determined to ensure the community understands what Labor will deliver. "I will fight hard," he declares, promising to maintain his straight-shooting approach to politics.
The political landscape is shifting. The old two-party system is no longer the dominant force it once was. As the community groups backed by Climate 200 gain traction, the possibility of a new era in Australian politics becomes increasingly likely.
Will the community's quest for change be realized? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the people of McFerson and beyond are ready for a new kind of leadership.
