Have you ever wondered what would happen if you tried to catch a baseball traveling at supersonic speeds? sounds like a scenario straight out of a sci-fi movie, doesn't it? Well, wonder no more. In our quest to push the limits of what's possible, we've embarked on a journey to understand the dynamics of a supersonic baseball and the challenge of catching it with a simple leather glove. In a previous episode of "Smarter Every Day," we achieved a dream by building the world's first supersonic baseball cannon. With the help of my friends Jeremy, David, and Trent, we designed, constructed, and tested this marvel of engineering. In fact, the impact was so powerful that it created a fireball when the leather of the glove and the ball collided.
So, what does all this mean? Can we ever hope to catch a supersonic baseball with a leather glove? The answer is not as straightforward as one might think. The force and energy involved are unlike anything we're used to dealing with in everyday life, and it's clear that we have a long way to go in understanding the complexities of supersonic phenomena.
