Warren Jones, the Chief Technology Officer for Sail GP racing, is revolutionizing the sport with a camera mounted on the stern of the boat. This camera feeds data to a new AI algorithm in the Oracle Cloud, enabling it to predict numerous events with high accuracy.
Imagine watching a live broadcast where the camera seamlessly moves and reacts to other boats, providing an immersive perspective. But that's not all – it can also identify individual athletes, allowing fans to closely follow their performance during the race. How is this possible, you ask?
The camera uses unique measurements of the athletes' skeletal structure, height, wingspan, and stride to identify them, even when they're wearing helmets and goggles. This level of detail ensures that fans can keep up with their favorite sailors, no matter how fast the action unfolds.
But the camera's capabilities extend beyond enhancing the fan experience. It can also improve the broadcast and assist teams during races. The AI algorithm can predict the boat's position within 1 cm accuracy and project its location in the next 20 to 30 seconds. This allows the camera to move within 100 milliseconds, ensuring that viewers never miss a crucial moment.
Safety is paramount in any sport, and this AI camera is no exception. The algorithm can identify potential collisions within 30 seconds and automatically alert the crew, allowing them to adjust their course. It can even predict when a capsize is imminent, providing critical information to the sailors.
During the 2024 Grand Final in San Francisco, this AI camera was placed on one of the racing marks, capturing breathtaking views and offering an unprecedented perspective of the race.
