In recent hours, a series of global cyber outages have caused delays and disruptions at European airports, affected media outlets, and even taken down the London Stock Exchange website. The list of affected entities seems to be growing by the minute. But what does this all mean, and why is it happening on such a global scale? Nigel Phair, a professor of cybersecurity at Monash University in Australia, joins us to shed some light on this pressing issue.

First and foremost, what are your thoughts on the fact that this outage is affecting so many countries and organizations worldwide? It's clear that Australia is also heavily impacted, with many organizations unable to function due to limited or no internet connectivity.

As we speak, major banks, airports, and airlines across the country are all reporting issues. How long do you think something like this could potentially last? Microsoft has identified the problem and believes there is no malicious activity involved. Do you agree with this assessment, and if so, how long do you expect the recovery to take?

It's reassuring to hear that there's no malicious activity detected at this stage. However, we must approach the online environment with caution when it comes to risk management. I predict that most organizations will regain some connectivity within the next 12 hours, but a full recovery of systems may not happen until early next week. Twelve hours is an extremely long time, especially considering the widespread impact we've seen in places like China.

The London Stock Exchange website is just one example of how this outage is causing serious issues for public life all over the world. We rely heavily on the online environment for everything from watching news to banking, using maps, and social media. It's concerning that several hours into this outage, major organizations are still unable to function, and there's no clear solution from the big vendors.

So, for those of us who aren't cybersecurity experts or tech-savvy, why does it take so long to fix these issues? It's easy to think that turning it off and on again would solve the problem, but finding and addressing the root cause can be a complex and time-consuming process.

If the issue is related to an update from a crowdsourced cybersecurity platform or Microsoft, it may involve lines of code that haven't been written correctly or a glitch in the software. In this case, the vendors need to review all the pieces of code and software upgrades before putting them into a test environment. They must test the solution from all angles before even considering implementing it in a real-life scenario, such as an airline or a bank. And this is where the time is going to take.

As we continue to navigate this global cyber outage, it's essential to recognize the importance of cybersecurity and the potential consequences of neglecting it. The next time you think turning it off and on again will solve the problem, remember the intricate process that goes into fixing these issues and the critical role cybersecurity plays in our daily lives. So, are we ready to face the challenges of the online environment, or will we continue to be caught off guard by cyber outages? Only time will tell.
