However, Enrique Vidal, a human rights and migration expert in southern Mexico, suggests there's more to the story.
While some may assume the decline in crossings signals an end to migration, Vidal expects a shift, not a stop. previously, migrants could cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally and still claim asylum. Now, with this option no longer available, many are opting for alternative paths. Leidi Colmenares, for instance, has chosen the longer legal route. But in southern Mexico, others are taking a riskier shortcut.
Enter the smugglers, who have long navigated the treacherous terrain of migration. One such smuggler, who requested anonymity, revealed that he's been moving migrants across the region for two decades. When we met him at one of his safe houses, he had just helped Dominican migrants cross the Guatemala-Mexico border. These smugglers are now cashing in on the confusion and anxiety caused by the policy change.
The Biden administration maintains that its strategy is curbing illegal immigration, and those we spoke to have indeed altered their plans. Yet, the future remains uncertain. Unauthorized border crossings have decreased, but will they stay that way? Colmenares, for her part, is focusing on obtaining legal status in Mexico, which could eventually lead her to the U.S. border if granted an appointment by C.B.P.
